5 Fabulous Chillable Red Wines for Summer
The best Summer reds are vibrant, energetic, and refreshing. They offer bright fruit, lively acidity, and moderate alcohol levels that make them just as enjoyable on a warm afternoon as they are paired with food fresh off the grill. Served with a slight chill—about 20 to 30 minutes in the refrigerator before pouring—these wines reveal an entirely different side of red wine.
This season, these are five bottles I find myself reaching for again and again...and AGAIN!
1. G.D. Vajra "Claré J.C." Langhe Nebbiolo, Piedmont, Italy
If Nebbiolo and a summer breeze had a love child, it might taste something like this.
Inspired by historical winemaking traditions from Piedmont, the Vajra family crafted this wine as a nod to the lighter, fresher red wines once enjoyed throughout the region. Unlike the powerful Barolos that Nebbiolo is famous for, Claré J.C. showcases a more playful expression of the grape.
Delicate aromas of wild strawberry, rose petals, blood orange, and alpine herbs leap from the glass. The palate is bright and energetic, with silky tannins and mouthwatering acidity that make it incredibly food-friendly.
This is the bottle I reach for alongside charcuterie, grilled flank steak, or a picnic spread beneath the shade of a tree.
Perfect Pairing: Prosciutto, melon, and aged Parmigiano-Reggiano
2. Chalmers Mother Block Red Blend, Murray Darling, Australia
The Chalmers family has built a reputation for championing Mediterranean grape varieties perfectly suited to Australia's warm climate. Their Mother Block Red Blend is a vibrant example of why varieties like Sagrantino and Nero d'Avola thrive in the heat.
Juicy red berries, crushed herbs, and savory spice notes create a wine that feels simultaneously rustic and refreshing. It's medium-bodied with bright acidity and a wonderful sense of energy that keeps you coming back for another sip.
This is the kind of wine that effortlessly bridges the gap between casual backyard gatherings and serious food pairings. A slight chill amplifies its freshness and highlights its lively fruit character.
Perfect Pairing: Wood-fired pizza, grilled sausages, and Summer veggies
3. Martin Woods Gamay Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Few grapes are better suited for Summer drinking than Gamay, and Martin Woods consistently produces one of my absolute favorite examples in the US.
Inspired by the great wines of Beaujolais while expressing the unique “terroir” of Oregon's Willamette Valley, this Gamay delivers everything I look for in a chillable red: purity, elegance, and irresistible drinkability.
Expect aromas of fresh raspberry, cranberry, violets, and subtle spice. On the palate, it's bright, silky, and incredibly refreshing with just enough earthiness to keep things interesting.
It's proof that serious wine doesn't always need to be serious.
Perfect Pairing: Cedar plank salmon, grilled mushrooms, and herb-roasted chicken
4. COS Frappato, Sicily, Italy
If Summer could be bottled, it might look a lot like Frappato.
And the pedigree behind this gem is something special. COS is a legendary union of three friends, Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti, and Cirino Strano, who revitalized Sicilian winemaking in the 1980’s. The name COS is an acronym for their last names, this wine embodies everything I love about Mediterranean winemaking. It's fragrant, vibrant, and effortlessly charming.
The nose bursts with red cherry, wild strawberry, pomegranate, rose petals, and hints of Mediterranean herbs. Light-bodied yet intensely flavorful, Frappato dances across the palate with remarkable freshness and elegance.
Served slightly chilled, it's one of the most versatile red wines you'll ever encounter.
Perfect Pairing: Tuna steaks, Sicilian caponata, and grilled seafood
5. Domaine Dupeuble Beaujolais, Burgundy, France
No list of chillable reds would be complete without Beaujolais, and Domaine Dupeuble remains one of the region's most beloved traditional producers and from our favorite importer Kermit Lynch! This Domaine produces some of our favorite Summer wines, they make a delicious rosé as well, and this incredible property is truly hallowed ground.
Made from Gamay, this wine captures the joyful spirit that has made Beaujolais a Summer favorite for generations. Bright red cherries, strawberries, and hints of spice are framed by vibrant acidity and soft tannins.
What I love most is its versatility. It can accompany everything from burgers and barbecue to roast chicken and charcuterie while remaining delightfully refreshing.
It's uncomplicated in the best possible way—a wine that reminds us that drinking wine should be fun.
Perfect Pairing: Charcuterie boards, roast chicken, and picnic fare
The Secret to Serving Chillable Reds
The key isn't serving these wines ice cold. Instead, place the bottle in the refrigerator for about 20 to 30 minutes before serving. The slight chill accentuates freshness, brightens fruit flavors, and makes the wines feel wonderfully refreshing in warm weather.
So as temperatures rise, don't relegate red wine to the cellar. Some of the world's most exciting and delicious Summer wines happen to be red.
